These are the garden boxes we designed in sketch up. We will be getting the wood and assembling the boxes in the next few classes!
This blog was created so our group members, Caroline, Danny, Dario, and Elizabeth, can keep up with each other and our progress on our project and partnership involving our dilemma, sustainable agriculture. Our teachers and fellow peers can also see how our project is going and can give us suggestions as we are working. There are 6 workdays left.
Sustainable agriculture calls for the humane treatment of both the product and workers, while not being detrimental to the health of the environment. Compared to factory farms where the health of the animals is secondary to profit, sustainable farms provide animals a natural habitat, which improves the quality of the product. A sustainable farm also takes in account the environment. Sustainable farms do not emit pollutants such as methane and hydrogen sulfide that contribute to global warming, and the increase of genetically modified crops because of factories has led to a decrease in biodiversity. This type of agriculture also benefits communities and workers. The farms provide jobs, to the community members, business to stores that sell supplies, and an overall healthier lifestyle. Workers are given fair wages and are not exposed to dangerous pesticides in enclosed spaces as they are in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs).
